Rallye de Tunisie – Saturday Mai 3rd - Final stage 9 : Ksar Ghilane-Djerba (338 km/ES9 : 286 km)
In the beautiful location of El Kantara beach, under a burning sun, the Ralye de Tunise has given us two superb winners. In the car category Dominique Housieaux and Jean Michel Polato (Buggy Schlesser); The French team have won the first leg of the FIA World Cup, all terrain rally. Just in front of Eric Vigouroux and Alex Winocq in their Trophy Truck Chevrolet, After a close race between them. Third, and proving Proto Dessoudre’s potential, Christian Lavieille and François Borsotto. In the bike category, Olivier Pain (Yamaha 450) scores his first victory in a major African rally. The young Frenchman and his team mate Mickael Pisano, also riding Yamaha 450 who came in second, gave Yahama the spotlight on the podium. Close behind an amazing performance by Stan Watt from Great Britain finishing third on his KTM 690. All competitors celebrated as champagne flowed on El Kantara beach this afternoon, bikes, quads, cars and trucks happy of the achievement in fulfilling an exceptional African rally over 4000 km long.
Polli : on the chain gang ! The Italian was doing well all along the Rallye de Tunisie 2008, affording himself a second place in the overall just last night. Following a double chain breakage during the very last special this morning, he conceded his goal a place on the podium.
A last push for Bethys… Accustomed in finishing in the top three, for the whole of the Rallye de Tunisie but leaving last this morning (having lost his engine yesterday during the Ksar Ghilane loop). the young Thierry Bethys was not deterred! He achieved the best time in today’s ultimate special.
Tixador : King of the ’EnduroCup. Gilles Tixador will remember the Rallye de Tunisie for long time, it was his 14th! But the first time competing in the EnduroCup category. He found his way, winning the category ahead of the Spaniard Garcia..
The east cometh: The Russian duo Andrey Ivanov and Aleksey Kuzmich (Nissan Patrol) won the T2 category, for series production cars. They were closely followed by Ardavichus and Berezovsky., Team Tecnosport, also driving a Nissan Patrol.
Tomecek all the way. Tomas Tomecek and his Tatra lead the way during the Rallye de Tunise, the Czech was followed by Elisabete Jacinto (MAN). No luck for the Belgian Tom De Leeuw (MAN), engine trouble prevented him finishing the last stage.
Girl Power ! Florence Migraine-Bourgnon et Ludivine Marchand (Toyota) were left in tears after the Dakar Cancellation. But the girls proved their potential on African soil by achieving 17th position overall, The only female team to make it to the end, well done!
